If you feel that Jesus’ parable about the workers in the vineyard from Matthew 20 is unfair, perhaps thinking of it in the following way could help. Imagine you are one of the first shift, at the end of the day you will be paid 20 million dollars for your measly days work. In fact, the guy who hired you is going to pay everyone who works for him this day 20 million no matter how many hours they put in.
Before you complain about “their” pay being unfair you must first confront the gross bias of your salary as well. At this point and upon recognizing the wage you receive is such a wonderful and yet undeserved, disproportionate gift, you will have no ill will toward everyone else who receives such an enormous gift along with you. In fact, jealousy or bitterness toward your fellow workers, even the rookies, is probably not going to be on your emotional shortlist because your shortlist of emotional activity will be consumed with your astonishment and admiration of your infinitely wealthy and indescribably generous employer.
