Songs We Sing (1/19/14)

“Worship is the act of ascribing ultimate value to something in a way that energizes and engages your entire being.” – Tim Keller

Worshipping is essentially a cyclical process of giving and receiving. We ascribe ultimate value to The One who is supremely worthy and in doing so we are validated and fulfilled and satisfied in the most profound way. Our singing then is not (and cannot possibly be) the extent of our worship and yet our worship cannot exclude singing and our songs.

To truly worship the true God is an all or nothing proposition. Worship is all encompassing love that, like an anchor, can only rest in a single place. In reality, no matter how hard we may try, there can be no dividing worship between our idols and the God who’s name is Jealous (Ex. 34:14). If God is not the object of your worship Monday – Saturday, He is not your God on Sunday no matter what you sing.

We have been called to worship our God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:29-30). This is impossible to do as an act of sheer willpower. Consequently you fail at this. We all fail at this. And this struggle, all part of our worship (2 Cor. 12:9), will continue until we are glorified, and we will be glorified (Rom. 8:29-30). Until then, we keep rising, boasting in weakness; thankful for mercy that is as fresh and reliable and depends upon us every bit as much as tomorrow’s dawn.

Let us worship well.

Here are our songs for this Lord’s day:

  1. And Can It Be That I Should Gain
  2. Seen A Darkness
  3. Hand Of God
  4. All The Poor And Powerless
