This week we will be singing a new song. “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory” also known as “Battle Hymn of the Republic” was written by Julia Ward Howe during the civil war while she was visiting a Union camp on the Potomac river. The soldiers there were singing “John Brown’s Body”. The song had such a powerful marching beat that it captivated Ms. Howe and a companion of her’s suggested that she write new words to the song. Early that next morning she woke up as “the long lines of the desired poem” she recalls, “began to entwine themselves in my mind…”
The tune we will be doing is a slightly modernized version via Page CXVI but unlike Page CXVI we will be keeping most of the lyrics just as Julia Howe originally penned them. For this reason, the version you can listen to below is not exactly the same as we will be learning but close enough. Enjoy.
Here are our songs for this Lord’s Day:
- Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder
- Sins Are Stones
