Songs We Sing (6/16/13)

Knowledge is scaleable. Truth that can fill volumes can be scaled down to fit on a bumper sticker or in a sound byte or in the 120 characters of a tweet. If you don’t believe me, just think of the universal Christian confession, Jesus is Lord. We can leave that truth claim to nothing more than the three words that make up the sentence itself and it would not be able to get any more true. And yet this truth—that Christ is Lord, could be expounded upon to fill volumes. We could study that for the rest of our lives and even then not come to fully grasp the weight of those three little words and yet even a child can believe it, can know it and can confess it.

It is like standing at the alter with the one you love, making marriage vows and saying those three precious words, “I love you.” In an instant, you are married, joined, covenanted and that is real and true no matter how long you both shall live after that moment. But as the days and years and experiences are accumulated, what it means to be married, what it means to “love” becomes more and more expansive. It doesn’t become more true or more “real” but the knowledge of what is true certainly becomes greater and more apprehended.

It is like getting in a boat and sailing out to sea. The sea doesn’t actually become bigger and the land doesn’t actually become smaller the further out you go. But I promise you, the further out you go certainly does change something. And that something is what you see. What you know.

As we sing these songs, ask your Father, whether you are at the bumper sticker or the bookshelf, to take you out to sea. Ask your Father to teach you these truths as you teach those around you.

Listen and be heard. Don’t be afraid of the sea or of our journey. We have a good captain who knows just where He means to take us.

Here are the songs:

  1. Beautiful
  2. Christ Is Risen, He Is Risen Indeed!
  3. Feels Like Home
  4. For The Beauty Of The Earth
